Certification Extends to Several Aircraft Models

September 13, 2023 – Garmin announced it has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for the GFC™ 500 digital autopilot in additional aircraft to include select Cessna Cardinal 177/177A , Beechcraft T34A/T34B Series, and Piper Seneca PA-34-200T and PA34-220T II-V models.  Certification for the Piper Seneca marks the second twin-engine aircraft for which the GFC500 system has been approved.

The GFC 500 is one of two new solid-state, attitude-based (AHRS-derived) digital autopilot systems for fixed-wing general aviation aircraft that Garmin announced in mid-2017.  The GFC 500 is a robust, modern system that should offers better reliability than older-generation autopilot systems and an abundance of safety-enhancing features, such as Electronic Stability and Protection, under-speed protection, over-speed protection, Level Mode, Flight Director and more.

The GFC 500 leverages the Garmin G5 or GI-275 electronic flight instrument and Garmin G3X Touch – two very popular, affordable safety-enhancing glass cockpit products.  The GFC 500 also interfaces to selected Garmin Nav radios and GPS navigators. 

The GFC 500 was initially certified for installation in several Cessna 172 and 182 models.  Since then, Garmin has expanded the list from time to time such that now, DOZENS of aircraft models are included in its certification list.
